As a first-time author and publisher, attending the 21st International Latino Book Awards was an inspiring and humbling experience. I witnessed the dedication of many talented authors, publishers, and other professionals from around the globe. They were all committed to making this world a better place through their work.
As the presenters announced the First Place Medals in each category and the recipients gave their speeches, I didn’t hear authors peddling their wares. I heard from strong men and women sharing their stories and their passion for impacting the lives of others.
I was reminded of my own story and that I stand on the shoulders of giants. My parents had a 2nd and 3rd-grade education. They came to this country in search of a better future. They knew this better future would not be for them, but for their children and the generations to come.
If they were alive today, they would be proud to see their sacrifices were not in vain. They made a difference. The better future they worked so hard to achieve is already here.
Thank you, Mom and Dad. I love you both with all my heart. Until I see you again.
